A classic arena shooter

A third installment of the Unreal Tournament series, Unreal Tournament 2004 — also known as UT2004 — is a multiplayer title where 32 players engage in futuristic, gladiator-style first-person action in over 90 indoor and outdoor maps.

Although the game is a sequel to Unreal Tournament 2003, the 2004 iteration is more of an extension and update of the 2003 title, meaning players will see familiar faces and maps. Despite that, UT2004 has brought in changes, including gameplay improvements and never-before-seen maps as well as the return of the fan-favorite Assault mode.

Skirmish on new maps

Unreal Tournament 2004 features a host of game modes to satisfy the most battle-hardened players. These include Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, and other staple game modes along with the round-based Assault and the all-new Onslaught. In Assault, two teams play as attackers or defenders. The attacking team assaults the latter’s base and accomplishes all objectives within the time limit, whereas the defenders protect their base and stymie their foes’ progress.

On the other hand, in Onslaught, two teams face off in a game of strategy, tactics, and frenetic action with the objective of destroying the opposing team’s Power Core on a spacious map. Both Assault and Onslaught involve vehicular combat, a key gameplay feature that makes the difference between losing and winning a match. On top of the new modes and maps, this iteration features new playable characters and weapons.

Each character belongs on either of the new teams, and these are the Hellions, Thunder Crash, Robotic Corrupt, and Iron Skull. In addition, players can now use a wider arsenal of new weapons, including the AVRiL — known as the anti-vehicle rocket launcher — Grenade Launcher, and the Mine Layer. Although the servers have been shut down by Epic Games, you can still enjoy the game’s offline single-player and local multiplayer modes.

Delisted but playable offline if you own the game

Overall, Unreal Tournament 2004 is a classic arena shooter that tickles the nostalgia of many players. Though some may perceive it as a slight upgrade to Unreal Tournament 2003, the 2004 iteration brings something fresh to the table, such as gameplay enhancements and the addition of new maps, characters, and game modes. However, due to server shutdown, online play is no longer possible.
